Since its founding in Stamford, Connecticut more than a century ago, Wofsey Rosen has dedicated itself to professional excellence and highly responsive service. We have succeeded and grown based upon one consistent principle: the active and aggressive pursuit of our clients’ interests.

Our firm consists of experienced and skilled practitioners in many fields of law, including litigation, corporate and transactional law, employment law, real estate and land use, personal injury, products liability, insurance, family law, landlord-tenant law, and wills, trusts and probate. Our attorneys frequently work in teams to give clients who are confronting complex problems the benefit of an unusually broad base of legal talent, training, and experience.

Our firm is large enough to offer skilled assistance in almost any field of law. It is also small enough for us to work closely with clients and to establish personal and lasting relationships with them. Many clients have been affiliated with our office for decades, and many families have been our clients for generations.

We are proud of the large number of referrals we receive, not only from our clients, but also from other lawyers throughout Connecticut, including Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport, New London, Waterbury, and surrounding communities, as well as the rest of the country. We believe this results from our reputation for high-quality work, aggressive advocacy on behalf of clients, our commitment to professional excellence and public service, and our comprehensive understanding of the region’s corporate, business, and legal communities.

We invite you to meet with us, learn more about our capabilities and experience, and discuss your specific needs and how we can best accomplish them.

A History of Quality and Commitment

Wofsey Rosen traces its roots back to 1915, when Abraham (“Abe”) Wofsey opened a solo practice in Stamford, Connecticut, after graduating from New York University School of Law. He was a skilled lawyer, whose legal and political acumen was recognized when he was appointed as the first Jewish judge in lower Fairfield County. He was also devoted to public service, and he headed a great many philanthropic, religious and cultural organizations, both at the local and national levels.

In 1922, Abe Wofsey consolidated his practice with Samuel Gordon, another well-known attorney, and they established the law firm of Wofsey & Gordon. Like his older brother, Mike Wofsey also became a lawyer, graduating from Yale Law School in 1927. In 1933, Mike Wofsey joined Wofsey & Gordon as an associate. Shortly after Mike Wofsey joined the firm, Sam Gordon left, and the firm became known as Wofsey & Wofsey.

Abe Wofsey died in 1944, at the age of fifty-five. After his brother’s death, Mike Wofsey practiced alone. Mike Wofsey was a renowned lawyer with a diverse and fiercely loyal clientele. When the effects of The Great Depression began to subside towards the end of World War II, Mike Wofsey had difficulty managing his workload. Fortunately, his nephew Jack Wofsey knew a distinguished young lawyer named Sydney Kweskin, who was persuaded to join Michael’s practice upon his discharge from the army. In 1946, Syd Kweskin joined the firm as a partner, and it was renamed Wofsey & Kweskin.

The two-lawyer firm of Wofsey & Kweskin continued successfully until April 1, 1948, when David M. Rosen joined the firm. Through a combination of legal skill and personal magnetism, Dave Rosen continued to grow the firm’s areas of practice and its client base. After Dave Rosen joined the firm, it became known as Wofsey, Rosen & Kweskin.

The last named partner to join the firm was Julius Kuriansky. In the 1940s, Julius had a successful law practice with Sam Gordon, who previously practiced with Abe Wofsey. After Sam Gordon’s death, Julius joined forces with his friends at Wofsey, Rosen & Kweskin. On January 1, 1952, the firm name was changed to Wofsey, Rosen, Kweskin & Kuriansky.

Sadly, Mike Wofsey died in his mid 40s, two months before Julius Kuriansky joined the firm. Out of deference to their deceased partner, Sydney Kweskin, David Rosen and Julius Kuriansky decided to retain the firm’s name for posterity.

The founders of our firm believed strongly that each client was entitled to the utmost devotion of loyalty and skill. They also believed that it was just as important to “do good” as to “do well.” During their lives, each founding partner was actively involved in many public service and charitable activities. Their contributions to society and to our firm will be felt for generations.

We are proud of our history and our heritage, and we look forward to continuing the legacy by serving clients and the community for decades to come.
